Pacifica's Esplanade Beach is shown in this April 2021 photo. A swimmer went missing while swimming in the waters here on Jan. 19, 2023. First responders are searching the coastal waters off of Pacifica for a San Francisco State University student who went missing Thursday morning while swimming in the ocean, according to police. Officers and firefighters responded to reports of a swimmer in distress around 10:30 a.m. at Esplanade Beach and found two men who said their friend was struck by a large wave and pulled away from the shore, Pacific police said.
